DataDives

Are you ready to find and use the powerful insights your data can give you? DataDives bring together a team of experienced data scientists to work on specific challenges presented by your organisation. Our volunteer community will support your organisation to better understand both your data and the potential of data science to increase your impact. Since DataKind UK was launched in 2013 we’ve held more than 30 DataDives.

We support you to define those challenges and ready your data in preparation for an intense weekend spent generating results. The programmes are run at no cost to the social change organisation, and are made possible by the pro bono contributions of data experts.

You’ll end the project with a better understanding of what it is possible to achieve with your data. And you’ll gain concrete evidence that will support your decision making and how to best work towards your mission.

  • Associate Director of Data, AddAction
It was the first time I experienced a group of people all using a dataset with the sole purpose of understanding it. There was no expectation that we would find out anything, no assumptions, no need to turn it into a report that evidence how we use funding or compare us to another service. We weren’t constrained by any of the things that ordinarily we have to consider when we pull data together.
    Associate Director of Data, AddAction
  • Our experience of working with DataKind has been fantastic. We have had some of our assumptions confirmed and learned new things about our supporters. These findings will directly impact our fundraising strategy and help to sustainably fund our work in the future. Our DataDive was also very useful in helping develop how we capture and record data... and increased our confidence and helped us to cement the importance of data insight at Meningitis Now.

Never thought I could come away from the Dive with so much new and diverse knowledge!
    Lena, Analyst, Stop the Traffik
  • Street League logo
Street League is a really data-driven organisation; we’ve always tried to use data to understand how we’re doing and how we can get better. The strength of a DataDive is having so many people with different perspectives and experiences looking at that data without the biases that we might have. They gave us really objective, comprehensive advice and recommendations about our data, data collection methods, and programmes going forward.

  • Maria, Support Insights Manager, MacMillan Cancer Support
The experience was phenomenal. The format and timing of the DataDive really worked. We learnt so much, plus it was really fun!
Maria, Support Insights Manager, MacMillan Cancer Support
  • Erika, Alzheimer's Society
We didn't know quite what to expect but it was an enlightening and worthwhile experience. The volunteers were enthusiastic and dedicated to helping us get the answers to our questions by using their amazing data skills. The opportunities for networking were really useful and we now have a better understanding of how important good data is for understanding what we need to do!
    Erika, Alzheimer's Society
  • The DataDive was a real clarifying moment for us. You put us in a time machine, took us into the future and showed us what was possible. It made us realise that if we didn’t change our practices we’d be stuck. The DataDive gave us the in-house experience we needed. It gave us the confidence to know what to change and to prioritise it.
Rich, Programme Performance Advisor, Christian Aid
  • The DataDive really opened my eyes to what is possible. With better datasets, and the right people analysing them, we can do so much more than we thought!
    Steph, Oxfam GB
  • From the application process to the actual DataDive event, the support has been amazing, and the Ambassadors are there to support you through the process. Whether you are a whizz with data or a complete novice, there seems to be a place for you.
Caleb, Head of Adult Services, Tameside, Oldham & Glossop Mind

How does it work?

DataDives are six to eight-week projects that culminate in a weekend-long, hackathon-style event. They create exploratory spaces where you’ll have first-hand access to diverse data science expertise. DataKind UK is there every step of the way, from the initial assessment of your application, to ensuring there are plenty of snacks at the Dive weekend.

1

Apply

When you first apply for a DataDive, we pass your project to our Scoping Committee, which is made up of pro bono data scientists who are experienced in scoping and refining data projects. If they think it’s a viable project, we’ll have a call with you to find out more about your organisation and what you want to learn using data science. We also look at your data maturity and ask for a data sample.
2

Team Up

We’ll agree on a date for the DataDive weekend, and get started. You’ll work with three volunteer Data Ambassadors, experienced data scientists in industry, for about six weeks before the Dive to hone your questions and prepare your data. You’ll have regular meetings to ensure that everyone can get the most out of the Dive weekend.
3

Get Ready

We’ll arrange a DataDive Ready workshop to ensure you, your team, and your data, are prepared for the Dive weekend. While we work hard to get fantastic results for you, these are also fun, informal events where you can get to know your brilliant team.

DataDive Weekend

All the work comes together at the DataDive weekend, where a group of 20 to 30 data experts join the Data Ambassadors to answer your questions and get the insights you need. We follow up with an impact call to make sure you’re happy with the results of your project, and have the support you need to make sustainable change and continue to improve your data maturity.

What are the outcomes of a DataDive?

Participation in a DataDive can be pivotal for social change organisations. A DataDive will teach you new ways to analyse your data, improve your data collection, and present your results. Most of our previous partners have used the analysis that was generated from their Dive to inform decision making in their organisation.

These clarifying moments then lead to long term impact:

  • A DataDive with Citizens Advice led to new data analyst hires, and working with us also enabled them to share their data with another UK charity who would benefit from it.
  • When we worked with Buttle UK, the staff member was inspired to learn to code, and can now do in one click a calculation that used to take her a full day.
  • Our work with Global Witness to reduce corporate corruption contributed to a change in Government legislation.
